The CPR developed the Western Section first. Situated next to the eastern edge of Calgary, it's dam was actually located within the city limits. Plans for this district included $5,000,000 in works and some 2900 miles (4,600 kilometres) in ditches. Construction began in 1908, and by 1914 water was flowing through the system. However, this area receives enough water on average to produce good crops, thus the irrigation system was frequently unnecessary.
