Construction of the Pedestals

 

Foundation Design

The foundations, or pedestals, sat on bases 7 feet below the ground. They stood on stiff, sandy clay that the engineers boasted would hold its weight well. But digging the foundations wasn't always easy, and thick pockets of clay and stone required the use of blasting caps.
